Umai - The Melanau's Sushi

Umai is Melanau traditional dishes - Umai was originally a food of convenience for Melanau fishermen on fishing trips to the sea. Traditionally, umai is thinly sliced raw fish marinated with ‘assam paya’, a very sour fruit of a wild palm, onions, chillies, and a pinch of salt – a very simple recipe that could be prepared with the minimum of fuss.

Fresh chillies ~ Lime ~ Big Onion - pinch of salt (you also can mix it with Ginger, Peanut, red onion or slices of red chilli) but mine is a very simple =)

Much delicious is when 'Umai' is prepared from fish 'Tenggiri Batang' a big fish just like Solomon, merinating with Lime juice, slices of big Onion and blended chillies (mix with 'cili padi')

All done and ready to eat; the simplest 'Umai' so spicy, finger likinng gud =).  As a Melanau ethic, we use to eat it with Sago pellets than rice.
